I am so excited to be thinking about and talking about my favorite time of the year— FALL! If you’ve been keeping up to date with One Sharp Mama, you may have seen that we had a post on our favorite Outdoor Amazon Halloween Decorations. As fall quickly approaches, I figured I’d throw together a list of 11 Free (or close to free) and Fun Family activities you can try out this fall. We can’t wait to try these out with Caroline, as this is her first fall!
Fun and free/almost free Fall Family Activities :
Make a Halloween costume: This is something the whole family can get involved in. Whether you’re making a themed family halloween costume set or just making one for someone, making the costume is almost just as fun as it is to wear it and go trick or treating.
Pumpkin Patch : I have found that pumpkin patches aren’t just about pumpkins anymore– at least in our area! A lot of the patches will have hay rides or other games set up. You can easily make this into a fun family activity filled afternoon
Decorate those Pumpkins from the Patch : So, there’s so many ways to decorate pumpkins now! You can do the classic pumpkin carving. You can paint them. I have even seen some people who use them in other crafts.
Make everything apple and pumpkin flavor – you’ll find a ton of Apple Cider recipes, apple butter, pumpkin pie, pumpkin spiced latte, pretty much anything pumpkin flavored can be made now a days. Just check on Pinterest. There’s about a zillion pumpkin and apple recipes out there. I think I’ll end up doing a round up post on some of these awesome recipes soon! Make sure to check them out.
Go to a Haunted House : These can be found all over the place. Some are free, but, some charge. So make sure to check them out ahead of time. I remember growing up, my elementary school had a Halloween weekend where students and their parents could volunteer and have Halloween games and treats, and of course, my family and friends, always volunteered to set up the Art Room as the Haunted House. We did it for years and everybody LOVEDDDD it. We all got so into setting it up. It was such a fun thing to do. So, check your local community to see if anything like that goes on in your area.
Rake the leaves and then JUMP in them! Now is the time to have everyone work together in making those leave piles. But every once in a while, you need to take the moment to enjoy life through a child’s eyes and jump in the leaves. Then everybody can work together and bag them up.
Make leaf projects. If you go on Pinterest, you will find quite a few fun family inspired leaf projects you can sit together and create. Make sure to save a few from your leaf raking project to use for these ideas. You’ll have a blast.
Go Apple Picking- we have an apple orchard not too far from where we live and I can’t wait to take Caroline. I know she’s too young to really understand what is going on. But, picking those apples will bring back some awesome memories of the next activity—
Bob for Apples : Every year when I was a kid, my Aunt help what we called Octoberfest. We’d make scarecrows, bob for apples and guess the amount of candy corn in the jar. It was something we did every year and I really enjoyed seeing family and participating in each of the activities. Make sure to grab a spare pair of clothing. I was never a fan of bobbing for apples and then having to have wet clothing the rest of the day.
Make Scarecrows: This was always a good time. Picking out one of your old outfits to use (or mom or dad’s old clothing worked too). I was always excited to pick the outfit out and then stuff it so it sat perfectly by itself. Can’t wait until Caroline is a couple years older to try this out.
Bonfire : This is something else we did at our Octoberfest party. Once the sun started to set, we could finally light the fire we would have been collecting sticks for all day. It was fun to have a nice fire to sit at and reminisce and talk around. We got to catch up about what everyone had been doing throughout the year and of course do the next activity—
Make S’mores : This was interesting for me as a kid. I never liked the stickyness of the S’more marshmallows. It was just something I hated. But, I loved eating the graham cracker, marshmallow and chocolate separately. But, as I got older, I got over the sticky part and was able to figure out how to make it less messy. Now, you won’t ever catch me passing on a s’more opportunity. But, you’ll never catch me eating a burnt one! I know a lot of people like eating them burnt, but, it’s not for me.
Bonus: Go for a hike and check out the fall foliage. The fall temperatures should make for a perfect hike for the family. The kids can always use some outdoor time and fresh air.
These were just some of my favorite fall activities to do as a kid. I hope you enjoy them too. I could make this list go on for days. Fall is truly one of my favorites. I mean anytime I can wear jeans and my hoodies, I’m all about it. These are just a glimpse of my favorite fall activities, I know there are a ton more.
