Are you a new parent and wondering how you’re supposed to put a car seat in a shopping cart? I know that was me. If I put my infant car seat in the shopping cart, where the heck am I supposed to put my groceries?
Keep on reading if you’re looking for a safer and more efficient way to grocery shop without the hassle of putting the car seat in a shopping cart.
Shopping Cart and Car Seat Safety
Did you know that there is over 24,000 shopping cart related injuries that involve children that end up in the Emergency Room each year? I saw that statistic and was blown away.
I know kids can be crazy and act like animals, but, I had no idea that the number of shopping cart related injuries was that high.
Falling from the shopping cart is the number one reason for head injuries in young children. Yikes, that’s super scary!
I also know that taking your infant grocery shopping is next to impossible. Not because they’ll act crazy, because, well, they’re babies, they are allowed to do that.
But, have you ever tried to put an infant car seat inside of a grocery shopping cart? Well, I tried and there is pretty much NO room for groceries. I couldn’t even put a gallon of milk in with my daughter.
History of Car Seats and Shopping Carts
I know years ago, growing up, I saw a lot of car seats that would sit on top of the grocery cart children’s seat and they would basically connect or lock into the back of the seat.
I’m not sure if their was an increase in accidents ( I mean logically, it would make sense to contribute to such a large number of accidents per year), but, I don’t see people doing that anymore. In fact, it didn’t even work with our car seat. I tried it, not once, but multiple times on multiple kinds of shopping carts, with no luck.
So, that was out of the question. I sure as heck didn’t feel comfortable putting my infant in the shopping cart seat area with a blanket either. As she got older, older enough to sit up on her own I would bring in our shopping cart cover and let her sit in the seat part.
But, when she was sleeping in her car seat— I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want to waste time sitting in the car while she slept. I didn’t want to take her out of her car seat and hold her and somehow grow a third arm to push the cart with. I didn’t want to put her giant car seat in the cart have no room for groceries either. So, what does a mother do?

The Easiest Way to Grocery Shop with a Baby
The Binxy Baby Shopping Cart Hammock is the answer to many grocery shopping quandaries when shopping with a child. I am so excited to share this with all of my moms, mom to be’s or family and friends of pregnant ladies. This thing is a life saver and needs to be added to every baby registry out there. You’ll thank me later 😉
The Hammock is great for many reasons. It’s compact in size and fits right into your diaper bag or even a reusable grocery bag for storage. I keep mine in the seat back pocket of the passenger seat in front of the car seat so I know where it is at all times.
Is the Binxy Baby Hammock safe?
It’s been safety tested and has been featured in Parent’s Magazine, Buzzfeed, CupcakeMag and many, many more highly acclaimed parenting resources!
How to Use the Binxy Baby Hammock on the Shopping Cart
It’s super easy to attach to the cart. It’s a quick time saver, especially for those grocery visits that you need to be a quick run in and run out safely. It connects to the cart by two 12 inch, very sturdy clips which can then be secured to the cart with the velcro straps.
The Hammock hangs elevated off the floor of the cart to allow for PLENTY of room to toss your groceries in. The Hammock can be used with your infant car seat. It comes with a safety buckle that straps across the hammock to lock in baby and keep them safely strapped in.
(Obviously, keep baby securely locked in their car seat as well).
This strap is great to keep them locked into position even if the cart gets bumped. Back in the day, if you bumped a cart with the car seat on the top of the seat like I mentioned before, most of the time, the car seat would be knocked off and baby would plummet face to the ground, scaring the living daylights out of mama and anyone else involved.
This is the function I truly love about the hammock. I can’t tell you how many times I needed to run into the grocery store to grab a couple quick things and Caroline was sleeping.
EVERY single time I would take her whole big ol’ car seat in the cart and she would wake up mid walk to the store. The bumps in the parking lot would wake her up. So then she was grumpy and the run needed to be even quicker- but I had no room in the cart for the items.
I was one FRUSTRATED mama! I used to love going to the grocery store, but, it was becoming a hassle with a little one.
How old does baby have to be to use the Binxy Baby Hammock?
I wish I would have had this when Caroline was even younger. You can use the hammock when baby is old enough to have control of their neck. This age can vary from baby to baby. If you’re baby is developmentally ready to hold their head up and have decent neck control, then you can use the Binxy Baby Hammock.
You can lay baby in the hammock and strap them in. They’ll safely lay there while you grocery shop. They’re designed to be used from baby birth until when they can sit up unassisted or around 6-8 months.
They’re not recommended to be used when baby is strong enough to pull themselves out of the hammock. That’s why we only use it for Caroline now as a car seat hammock.
Can you use the Car Seat Hammock with multiple kids?
What is awesome is, since these are compact, like I said above, you can use them with multiple kids. If you have an older child in the shopping cart seat, you can still put a younger one in the hammock.
If you have twin young ones, you can lay both in two hammocks and still have room to toss your groceries inside. The hammocks are amazingly strong and can hold up to 50lbs. Caroline and her car seat don’t weigh anywhere near 50 lbs at eleven months old, so I feel very safe using this.
How do you clean the Shopping Cart Hammock?
Another important thing to know with anything baby related is – how easy is it for it to be cleaned? Well, guess what?! This puppy is super simple to clean, just toss it in the washer and wash on cold and then lay flat to dry.
