Do you struggle at meal time to keep your household together? Does your Toddler love to toss food and their plates, cups and utensils on the floor? Find out what we tried that has helped bring sanity back to our meal time. Once Caroline hit one year old it was like she developed an extra independent gene or something. It was like the week after she turned one she had to do EVERYTHING herself. She wanted to do things herself before but she it wasn’t a struggle when mommy said no, let mommy do it, or let mommy help. One thing we had been working on way before she turned one was feeding herself. Obviously, that’s a vital skill to learn. She has become a master of the pincer grip, full face smashing of the food into the mouth and is an expert in feeding the dog from her high chair. Okay, okay, in all reality, she can feed herself with her hands very well. She has great hand, eye, mouth coordination. She has a good gag reflex if she tries to fill up her cheeks too much and swallow it all at once and I don’t catch her. So, we needed these toddler meal time tips for toddlers and I’m excited to share them with you.
So, now, the kicker is to get her to eat with utensils. We had quite a few from our baby shower. I liked the spoons for feeding her baby food, however, they are not practical with her little hands and do not flex very well with her or work for her. She gets very annoyed and frustrated with those spoons. So, it was time for an intervention. We also hadn’t been using any plates either. She had a thing about throwing the plates on the floor. So, I saved our plates from being destroyed and just stopped with that all together and let her eat off the high chair tray.

Nuby came to our rescue with the Sure Grip Miracle Mat Section Plate and their Stainless Steel Utensils. We were very excited to try them out and see how Caroline did with them. The Sure Grip Miracle Mat Section Plate can be used as early as 6 months (and on). I wish we would have had them back then, maybe I could have prevented the desire the throw all of the plates on the ground with this Mat because the nonslip base physically suctions/sticks to the table or high chair. We love so many Nuby products! Have you read our review on the ONLY Sippy Cups our daughter wants to use?!?
What I really like about the Mat is the sections. As well all know, Pediatricians recommend that children get a variety of foods, just like is recommended as an adult. If you’re interested in finding more guidelines, make sure to check with your specific Pediatrician.
Personally, I have a thing where I don’t care to have any of my food touching. I’d love to have this plate as an adult. But, Caroline loves it, I can put her fruit in one section, veggies in another and protein in a different section. It helps to look at proper portion sizes for children as well. It’s a placemat and plate all in one- very convenient.
It’s dishwasher safe (BIG mama win), but, can be easily wiped clean when you’re on the go and need to toss it back in the diaper bag. Nuby is great about creating products that are BPA and PVC free, which is another big parenting win. If this sounds like something you’re interested in or you’d love to have- make sure to grab yours at your local Babies R’ Us.
Caroline seems to not mess with the Mat, which is nice. I definitely feel like more of a civilized mother feeding my child off of a plate rather than just the highchair tray or the restaurant table (and disposable mat). The Sure Grip Miracle Mat Section Plate is definitely a keeper in the Sharp Household.
The challenging thing to do is to teach little ones to eat with utensils. Surprisingly, Caroline is doing decent with them. She likes the size of these Stainless Steel Utensils made by Nuby. They fit her small hands and have an Easy Grip Handle.
They’re BPA Free and are great to use once your child reaches a year old. Watching her try to chase food around the little Miracle Mat Section Plate with her utensils is always entertaining. We don’t let her use the knife just yet. These specific Stainless Steel Utensils haven’t hit the BabiesRUs or any other Nuby distributing website YET!!!! So, I don’t have a way to provide a link to them yet, but they should be available in your local BRU stores! (At least that is what Nuby tells me)
Overall, we are very thankful for the Utensils and the Sure Grip Miracle Mat Section Plate from Nuby. They have made meal time a little less hectic. The dog may not appreciate less food and plates being dropped, but, I think she will manage ( HAHAHAHA).
